While the thought of a secluded Caribbean beach may conjure up images of tropical paradise and vacation bliss, the island Father Gigi Amato is sent to could instead be best described as "Hell on Earth." Such is the intriguing setup for Exorcism Island, the new five-issue Comixology Originals series from writer Jordan Thomas and artist Chris Matthews that takes place on an island run by the Vatican, where unfortunate priests are given the hellish task of overseeing the island's demonically possessed inhabitants.

With the first issue of Exorcism Island coming out on October 21st via Amazon’s Comixology Originals digital line, we've been provided with exclusive character art and mini bios that offer a deeper look at the evil lurking within the possessed souls of Exorcism Island as well as the contemplative priests who must fight this unfathomable malevolence while facing personal demons of their own.

You can meet the cast of Exorcism Island in our exclusive look at character art and mini bios below, and we also have the official press release, cover art, and preview pages from the first issue!

EXORCISM ISLAND – MEET THE CHARACTERS

FATHER GIANLUCA “GIGI” AMATO

Gigi is an Italian priest who has recently had an encounter with a demonically possessed woman when the story starts. He is the newest member of our gang of exorcists who live on the island struggling with the overwhelming task of managing the many unfortunate souls suffering there. Gigi also brings a great shame with him to the island, something from his past that haunts him. He is a kind, open-hearted man although one confused about his place in the world.

FATHER JACOB MILLER

Father Miller is a rough and ready sort from Chicago with a sharp tongue and a cynical streak. He doesn’t understand why the priests are even there when all they do is fail at their task of freeing the possessed from the demons that inhabit them. However, despite his harsh exterior he is fiercely loyal and wouldn’t think twice about putting himself in harms way to protect one of the other priests. He is greatly tormented by his lost friend who still haunts the island in another form.

FATHER JULIUS HOWT

Father Howt is the elder statesman of the group and the most experienced exorcist; in fact he is the only one who had these skills before entering the island and has taken care of the training of the others. He is a serious but kind man with a sadness about him. He served in the army before joining the church and ruminates on the paths he didn’t follow. Howt is greatly respected by the other priests.

FATHER WILLIAM PELL

Father Pell is the group’s little brother. He’s anxious, nervous and on edge about what the island contains – you could say he’s the only one completely sane. He and Miller regularly verbally spar with each other and he finds himself the butt of many of Miller’s jokes. An orphan, he was placed into the care of the church at a young age and doesn’t have much experience of life outside the halls of Catholicism.

FATHER PASCAL GARRO

Father Garro is Kenyan and his easy charm is part of what holds the group together as knows how to handle the contrasting personalities of the various priests. Smart and knowledgeable on the island's ecosystem, he manages the supplies and his understanding of herbs and agriculture ensures they always have additional ingredients to bring a little life to their meals. A natural leader, he is ready to make decisions as they battle the many terrors of the island.

FATHER GERT JUNCTER

Father Juncter is an affable and friendly member of the group. He often plays the part of peacemaker and does his all to make life on the island as pleasant as is possible for all the other priests. He’s level-headed and does a lot of the explaining to new recruits on how things work. As with all the priests, he is on the island as he previously faced a demonically possessed person back in his former life, with the loss he suffered perhaps being the greatest of the whole unfortunate group.

THE POSSESSED

The possessed are the reason for the island’s existence. There are thirteen demonically possessed individuals locked up in the camp’s various cabins. They all have varying levels of evil spirit within them and have been possessed for anything between six months and five years. Some of these poor souls have even begun to display supernatural powers, making them incredibly dangerous and hard to keep under control. They are not to be taken lightly, but it is the job of the priests to continue to strive to lead their souls back to the light.

Press Release: Writer Jordan Thomas and artist Chris Matthews have been friends since the age of eleven and recently created the acclaimed crime comic Mugshots. Now, Thomas and Matthews are collaborating on Exorcism Island, a bombastic, multi-layered and ambitious horror story that spans the globe. It is not meant for the faint of heart. The 5-issue horror series will be released monthly from Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line beginning with Exorcism Island #1 on October 21, 2025, just in time for Halloween!

Exorcism Island takes the tradition of the best demonic possession stories and cranks it up several notches with ever-escalating terror and tense cliffhangers,” says Jordan Thomas, the acclaimed writer of The Man From Maybe and Skin Police. “This is a story that is both horrifying and highly entertaining. And Chris brings it all together with his unique and visually gripping graphic art style and color choices."

Following a terrifying confrontation with a possessed woman, Father Gigi Amato finds himself sent to a remote Caribbean Island run by the Vatican to join a group of priests tasked with looking after the most troubled, long-term, demonic possession cases. The group of psychologically and emotionally bruised priests bicker and bond in their attempt to keep the madness of the island under control, but dark forces are working against them from all sides as evil digs its nails into their spiritually poisoned, isolated home.

"The story is so rich with terrifying and unsettling imagery it was great fun getting to bring it all to life and add something to the world of horror and possession stories," said artist Chris Matthews.

Jordan Thomas hails from the South of England but is currently living in Valencia, Spain. His first published comics work was the 1920s post-war, farm-based horror series Frank At Home On The Farm. Since then, he has written a post-apocalyptic western The Man From Maybe and the clone hunting sci-fi series Skin Police for Oni Press, the alien world crime story Weird Work at Image Comics and the UK crime epic Mugshots at Mad Cave Studios, as well as horror shorts for EC Comics, XINO and Hello Darkness and the classic science fiction hero Flash Gordon.

Chris Matthews is originally from the south coast of England but currently lives in Berlin, Germany. Following a successful career in animation he began working on comic books in 2021 contributing art to several smaller projects before making the jump to a full series with Mugshots. He also has a dog called Clive.
