The sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a release date before it had a cast and director, but everything is finally starting to come together. A new report reveals the name of the actor who has been hired to star in the film, and we have new plot details.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zero Dark Thirty's Jason Clarke (pictured below) has officially signed on to star in the upcoming "Apes" sequel. Specific details on Clarke's character have not been released, but we now know that the movie will be set fifteen years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes:
"One focus is on the group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco. Another aspect of the story is the struggle of intelligent ape Caesar, played by a returning Andy Serkis, to maintain dominance over his kingdom."
Cloverfield and Let Me In director Matt Reeves has been hired to helm this project, and production is expected to begin this spring. A draft script was written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, when Rupert Wyatt was still on board as director, but Mark Bomback was hired after Reeves joined the project.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes already has a release date set for May 23rd, 2014, and it was announced a while back that Andy Serkis has officially signed on for the sequel. We'll report back when more casting news is announced.
