For that one dreaded night a year, the streets will remain lethal. Debuting in back-to-back years, The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy—both written and directed by James DeMonaco, have grossed a combined $200 million with a melded budget of $12 million, so it's not too surprising that Universal, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes are moving forward with The Purge 3.
Deadline reports that series creator James DeMonaco will handle scripting duties on the third flick and is looking to direct, as well. Sebastian Lemercier, Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum, and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form will reprise their producing roles. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, the films focus on the Annual Purge, a twelve-hour period where all crime is legal, including murder. The rule was put in place by the "New Founding Fathers of America" in order to reduce crime throughout the rest of the year.
Along with Platinum Dunes, Blumhouse and Universal were behind the first two Purge films and recently signed a ten-year extension on their production/distribution contract that includes both film and TV, keeping the future of the popular franchise under their umbrellas for another decade. No plot details or shooting dates have been revealed, but we'll let Daily Dead readers know when more details surface. The Purge: Anarchy comes out on Blu-ray and DVD on October 21st.
