Now available on Tubi, Donia Kash stars alongside Heidi N Closet, Cara Melle, Trinity the Tuck and Crystal Methyd in SLAY, a Tubi Original horror-comedy that is available to watch right now. In our latest Q&A, Donia talks about their interest in the role, the experience on set, and their love of vampire movies!
How did you first get involved with Slay and what interested you in the role of Jax?
Jem Garrard was looking for a non-binary performer who could do both horror genre and still have that fast-paced comedic energy that Jax brings to Slay. I just so happened to have auditioned for them on a different project and never imagined that Jax was the character I would get to play. They’re a character that has such Fan-Them energy that also lives inside me but they totally geek out in an extroverted way seeing the queens.
Do you have a favorite vampire movie and/or were there any films you watched in preparation for the role?
I don’t know if I have a favorite but I do love Vampires!! I loved the Blade trilogy growing up as well as Underworld. I definitely went into a deep dive watching Dusk till Dawn, the Twilight saga, and even What We Do in the Shadows.
The film very quickly becomes an all-out battle against vampires. What was the experience like on set?
It was awesome!! One of the greatest teams to work with and you can feel the love when you watch the film. Jem was so calm in the chaos and it’s lovely to work with a director who bounces off ideas while maintaining their vision to make the best film.
Although it is a vampire movie, it's also very much a comedy. Is there a moment on set you recall that was especially funny or caused you to break character while filming?
Jem wanted us to use some improv in certain scenes and wow, some of the things that came out of folks' mouths that also made the Final Cut of the film was hilarious!! Definitely unexpected in the best ways. It was sooo hard to keep a straight face to that actor or queen coming up with that line.
Now that you've faced off against a bar filled with vampires, do you have an interest in fighting any other movie monsters? Would you be open to more horror movies in the future?
I am in love with Horror now- this is fun!! More blood and some who done it?! I’d like to fight some zombies, werewolves, heck give me some dark fairy to smack. Into it!!
Can you share any details on what projects you have coming up?
Details…not so much but I'm excited to work on one of the biggest hit shows!!
