After earning praise from the legendary likes of R.L. Stine and Dan Aykroyd and thrilling readers with a compelling story of an orphaned teen empowered by a supernatural suit of armor and its phantasmal companion, the comic book series Armored from writer Michael Schwartz and artist Ismael Hernández is now coming together in a hardcover graphic novel that collects the first five issues along with plenty of ghoulish goodies for readers to enjoy.
With the Armored Vol. 1 hardcover graphic novel now on Kickstarter via Clover Press, Daily Dead caught up with Michael Schwartz in a new Q&A feature to discuss the journey of Armored thus far, the behind-the-scenes content that awaits readers in the hardcover collection, the graphic novel's eye-catching (and eye-glowing) cover art by Francesco Tomaselli, and what lies ahead in the future issues of Armored!

Thank you for taking the time to answer questions for us, Michael, and congratulations on the upcoming hardcover release of Armored, which collects the first five issues of the series and is now on Kickstarter! How did the opportunity to collect the first five issues of Armored in this gorgeous hardcover collection come about?
Michael Schwartz: Thanks so much for having me to chat about Armored! Last year, Clover Press released issues 1 to 5, and ever since, the number one question I get asked at comic cons and signings has been, “when will the graphic novel come out?” With so many collectors shifting toward graphic novels, it felt like the natural next step for Clover to put together this deluxe hardcover edition.
From being placed on “Best of the Year” lists to being praised by R.L. Stine and Dan Aykroyd, Armored has been really well-received through its first five issues. What has your reaction been to Armored finding such a welcoming fanbase?
Michael Schwartz: Armored has been a big part of my life the last couple of years. From creating the book to releasing and promoting it, I’ve been fully immersed in its world. Seeing it so well received has been amazing. I poured my heart and soul into this story, and the positive feedback has been nothing short of incredible.
The deluxe hardcover edition of Armored will include insights into the making of this series. What types of behind-the-scenes content will readers be able to enjoy?
Michael Schwartz: We’re really excited about this deluxe edition because it gives us the chance to showcase our creative process from script to finished art by illustrator Ismael Hernández. We haven’t shared much of the behind-the-scenes content on social media, so readers will get an inside look at how a page of Armored comes to life. This edition will also feature early character designs from the series, offering a deeper glimpse into the development of the world and its cast of characters.
In addition to featuring the wonderful artwork by Ismael Hernández, the Armored hardcover will feature amazing new cover art by Francesco Tomaselli. What was your reaction the first time you saw Francesco’s portrayal of Andy and his supernatural suit of armor on this new cover?
Michael Schwartz: I was completely blown away when Tomaselli sent over his artwork for Armored. I love how it stands apart from the other covers in the series, but also feels like it fits right in. It really has a cinematic feel to it. It’ll look even more stunning once it’s printed.
The fifth issue of Armored ended on quite the cliffhanger, and this deluxe hardcover includes a special preview of issue #6. What can you tease about the adventures awaiting readers in the upcoming story arc, and when can readers look forward to diving into the next stage of Andy’s journey?
Michael Schwartz: What’s really exciting about this campaign is that we’re offering the complete issue 6 as an add-on! It features a brand new cover by series regular cover artist, Jeff Dickson. He’s an incredible artist who worked on Disney classics like Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, and Beauty and the Beast. The issue picks up right where issue 5 left off and introduces us to a new warrior from China, who also wears a haunted suit of armor. We’ll learn how she came to possess her armor and how her story connects to the larger narrative with Andy and Sir William from the first arc.
What types of perks can supporters of the Kickstarter campaign look forward to?
Michael Schwartz: As mentioned, issue 6 is the reward I’m most excited for backers to get their hands on. But I’m also thrilled about the 16-card trading set Clover Press has put together. I hope fans get a kick out of them!
You initially teamed up with Clover Press to crowdfund Armored back in 2023. What has it been like to come full circle and reteam with Clover Press for the Kickstarter campaign for the volume one hardcover collection?
Michael Schwartz: It’s been an incredible journey. Clover Press has been incredibly supportive, giving Armored the time it needed to grow its fan base throughout 2024. When they first crowdfunded Issues 1 & 2 back in 2023, no one knew who I was or what the series was about. I think since then we now have loyal readers who are excited to see more Armored.
Ultimately, what do you hope readers take away from this first volume of Armored?
Michael Schwartz: I really hope more comic book fans discover the series and that they’ll share the book with younger readers who enjoy creepy, supernatural adventures. I set out to create a story that both older and younger fans could enjoy, and now that the series is being collected into one volume, it’ll be easier for new readers to jump in.
Armored marks your comic book writing debut, but you have plenty of experience as a screenwriter. How does writing a comic book script compare to writing a film script? Did your experiences as a screenwriter help prepare you for writing comics?
Michael Schwartz: The biggest difference between writing a comic and writing a movie is the level of detail required in the script. When writing a film, I rarely detail set design or camera angles. But with a comic, I need to break down each page and describe how many panels there are and exactly what’s happening in each one. Thankfully, working with Ismael has been an absolute blessing. He consistently elevates what I’ve written, bringing it to life with his incredible visual storytelling. Armored wouldn’t be what it is today without him.
What advice would you give to writers—in film or comics—who are just getting started?
Michael Schwartz: My biggest advice to writers is simple: write and finish your scripts. Finishing is often the hardest part, and you’d be surprised how many people want to write but never actually complete anything. Once you’ve finished, have others read it and get feedback to make the necessary changes. Then do whatever you can to bring it to life yourself. Don’t wait around for someone or some company to make it happen. And then do it all again. Practice makes perfect.
In addition to the Armored hardcover release, do you have any other upcoming projects that you can tease for our readers?
Michael Schwartz: I’m very excited to share that my next book, Till Death, co-written with Rachael Schaefer and illustrated by Gaia Cardinali will be released by Clover Press. We can’t wait to reveal more about that project soon! I’m also in the process of adapting a new R.L. Stine script with my co-writer, Peter Lepeniotis.
