About 30 years ago, Shane Black and Fred Dekker co-wrote The Monster Squad (which Dekker directed). With the dynamic duo now working together once again on The Predator, IGN caught up with Black, who talked about potentially returning to the fun and frightening world he created with Decker all those years ago.
Speaking with IGN, Black first reflected on The Monster Squad's box office blues and marveled at the film's growing cult following over the past three decades.
IGN reports that Black then went on to discuss his desire to make a remake of The Monster Squad, and they responded by suggesting a sequel instead (which would likely be more appealing to fans who fell in love with the characters from the original film).
Black warmed up to the idea, although he voiced concerns about being too close to the framework of Stephen King's IT, which features a group of friends who faced evil as kids only to reunite in their adult years for a rematch.
Black ultimately did express his interest in a potential sequel to The Monster Squad, though, saying:
"It would be interesting to have two movies - one The Monster Squad, and one The Monster Squad and they're 30 years apart and so are the kids; the characters have aged. As long as people understood that's what we're doing, I think that could be fun. That's a good idea!”
Maybe after they're finished with The Predator, Dekker and Black can start working on The Monster Squad 2. What do you think? Would you like to see what Sean Crenshaw and company are up to as adults?
