Over 35 years after the original film's premiere, Creepshow fans still have a lot to get excited about. Not only is Scream Factory releasing an all new Blu-ray Collector's Edition of the movie later this year, but it has just been announced that Shudder is resurrecting Creepshow for a new series (scheduled to premiere in 2019), with Greg Nicotero on board as one of the directors and executive producers:
Press Release: (July 18, 2018, New York, NY) – Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for thriller, suspense and horror, today announced it has greenlit a new Creepshow TV series with The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero attached to direct, executive produce, and supervise the show’s creative elements. The original Creepshow was an iconic anthology film that featured stories written by Stephen King and directed by George A. Romero, with stars like Ted Danson and Adrienne Barbeau. It’s an enduring favorite among horror fans that spawned two sequel films and a spin-off comic. Shudder general manager Craig Engler made the announcement.
“Creepshow is one of the most beloved and iconic horror anthologies from two masters of the genre, George A. Romero and Stephen King,” said Engler. “We're thrilled to continue their legacy with another master of horror, Greg Nicotero, as we bring a new Creepshow TV series exclusively to Shudder members.”
Nicotero, who met his mentor, makeup legend Tom Savini, while visiting the set of Creepshow and who later worked with Romero on Day of the Dead and Creepshow 2 added, “Creepshow is a project very close to my heart! It is one of those titles that embraces the true spirit of horror…thrills and chills celebrated in one of its truest art forms, the comic book come to life! I’m honored to continue the tradition in the ‘spirit’ in which it was created.”
The new Creepshow series, scheduled to debut on Shudder in 2019, will fulfill the promise of the original film's tagline “The Most Fun You'll Ever Have Being Scared.” Each episode of the anthology series will tell original fun and scary stories, and will be helmed by a different director, with Nicotero directing the first episode and his Oscar® and multiple Emmy® award-winning company KNB EFX GROUP Inc. handling the creature and make-up fx.
Shudder’s Creepshow will be produced by the Cartel with Monster Agency Productions, Taurus Entertainment, and Striker Entertainment: Stan Spry, Jeff Holland, and Eric Woods are executive producers for the Cartel; Greg Nicotero and Brian Witten are executive producers for Monster Agency Productions; Robert Dudelson, James Dudelson and Jordan Kizwani are executive producers for Taurus Entertainment; and Russell Binder and Marc Mostman are co-executive producers for Striker Entertainment.
“The Cartel is excited to bring the iconic Creepshow brand to Shudder as a series. There is no better person to be the creative force behind this new production than Greg Nicotero,” said Spry. “His experience and leadership will ensure that the series is of the highest quality and will help to excite horror fans around the world.”
About Greg Nicotero:
Entering his 35th year in the industry, Greg Nicotero has never forgotten his roots. Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 70’s, it never occurred to this young movie and special effects buff that Hollywood was literally in his backyard. Auteur director George Romero would be the first of many to recognize something within Greg and forge a relationship of collaboration as a special effects make-up artist.
Within 2 years he found himself in Los Angeles working with Sam Raimi, James Cameron and Wes Craven on landmark films such as EVIL DEAD 2, ALIENS and the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series. The climate that embraced practical make-up effects allowed Greg to partner with Howard Berger and together they created the longest running effects house in Hollywood, The KNB EFX GROUP, Inc. Founded in 1988 and still as vital as ever, Greg and his team have worked on nearly 700 film and television programs that stretch through cinema as a who’s who of horror, science fiction and thrillers. With titles such as RESERVOIR DOGS, SPAWN, THE MIST, SCREAM and SIN CITY, this unique troupe of artists have brought life to stories and characters of all kinds, all the while innovating and perfecting their craft.
Partnering with directors such as Frank Darabont, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Robert Rodriguez, Nicotero fine-tuned his craft as an effects artist and gradually moved into providing 2nd unit direction on several feature films. After a stint on a series of movies across the globe (INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, THE BOOK OF ELI, PREDATORS and TRANSFORMERS) Greg found himself in 2010 designing zombies for a series called THE WALKING DEAD. Within months he’d become the producing director on the hit AMC show and to this date has directed over 25 episodes of the series.
His work on THE PACIFIC, THE WALKING DEAD and BREAKING BAD have garnered him nearly a dozen Emmy nominations and 4 wins. As the zombie epic enters its ninth season, Greg has also had a hand in producing FEAR THE WALKING DEAD while supervising make-up effects for AMC’S PREACHER, and the upcoming Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron film ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL.
