A horror comedy that parodied everything from The X-Files to Godzilla movies, Stan Against Evil will not be returning for a fourth season on IFC, as the show's creator, Dana Gould, has confirmed that the series has been cancelled.
On the recent episode of his podcast The Dana Gould Hour (via Bloody Disgusting), Gould made the following statement regarding the current status of Stan Against Evil:
“Stan Against Evil, I am sad to report, will not be returning for a fourth season. It had a great run of three seasons. It’s not coming back. Will it show up in some other form on some other network someday? Maybe. But right now, as we like to say, it’s dead as Kelsey’s nuts.”
Premiering on Halloween night in 2016, Stan Against Evil ran for three seasons on IFC for a total of 24 episodes. The series' core cast included John C. McGinley, Janet Varney, Nate Mooney, and Deborah Baker Jr., who all brought their own unique comedy style to the show's narrative about a town under siege by supernatural forces seeking vengeance after being burned at the stake centuries ago.
I was lucky enough to visit the show's set just outside of Atlanta twice in recent years, and during those visits, it was evident that everyone on the cast and crew not only worked hard on this series, but had a great time doing so as well. As a lifelong fan of McGinley—from his performance in Platoon to his work on Scrubs to his truly chilling portrayal of Edgler Foreman Vess in the TV movie Intensity—it was a real treat to watch him play Stanley Miller, a retired sheriff and reluctant demon slayer who would rather take a nap in front of the TV than save the world from impending doom.
Here's hoping that someday, somehow, Stan Against Evil can be brought back from the dead. In the meantime, horror fans have three seasons of the series to enjoy, and that's something to be grateful for.
