Think of where you were when the first episode of Supernatural aired on The WB on September 13th, 2005. Then, think of where you are now. A lot has happened between 2005 and 2019, and through it all, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have been there for viewers as Sam and Dean Winchester. That era is now coming to an end, however, as it's been announced that the upcoming 15th season of Supernatural will be the final one.
The news was announced by multiple outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, as well as a video on Ackles' Instagram account (see below).
The long-running series recently celebrated its 300th episode that featured the return of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the father of Sam and Dean. The upcoming 15th season of Supernatural, which will premiere this year and conclude in 2020, will feature 20 new episodes.
Here's what Ackles had to say about the final season (via THR):
"We just told the crew that though we’re very very excited about moving in to our 15th season, it will be our last. Fifteen years of a show that has certainly changed my life, I know it’s changed these two guys’ life. And we just wanted you to hear from us that though we’re excited about next year, it will be the finale. The big, grand finale of an institution... I will say this, a little word from Eric Kripke, the creator about this world and these characters, that in a show about family, it is amazing and it is the pride of his life that it became a family. So thank you guys for that."
Ackles also shared the news on Twitter, where he teased that "nothing ever really ends in Supernatural...does it?"
Well, it’s official. One more round for the Winchester brothers. Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural...does it? ? https://t.co/zaZHJX4H9L

In an official statement (via THR), executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb added their thoughts on the news:
"Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We'd like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send off they deserve.”
