Now available in comic book shops everywhere is the latest story from the Hellboy Universe, The Serpent in the Garden: Ed Grey and the Last Battle for England, written by Mike Mignola and drawn by Ben Stenbeck, with colors by Dave Stewart and lettering from Clem Robins. Published by Dark Horse Comics, I had a chance to catch up with Ben Stenbeck for our latest Q&A, where he talks about re-teaming with Mike Mignola, gives a tease of what to expect from the new Ed Grey series, and lets us know what projects are coming up next:
What excited you about "The Serpent in the Garden" and teaming up with Mike Mignola once again?
Well, teaming up with Mike is always a no brainer. I know whatever he asks me to draw is going to be fun to work on. But this story has a character in it I've always wanted to draw. In fact, this series is probably more about this character than Ed Grey.
This takes place on the edge of the Hellboy Universe timeline, following the events of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know. What can you tell our readers about the state of the world in The Serpent in the Garden?
The world is over, the apocalypse happened, but England has gone back to nature and become Avalon. A sort of happy old memory of England.
In the first issue, it seems that Ed Grey goes through a bit of a "transformation." Can you give our readers a tease of what they can expect to see over the course of the 3-issue series?
Ed has to become England's last great champion. And that creates some pretty organic changes to his appearance over the course of the story. (And the same happens to his foe)
You mentioned that this is going to be your last Hellboy story for a little bit. What other projects do you have coming up that you can share with us?
In a few weeks I'll finish work on this series, and then I start work on my first Lands Unknown book, which I'm writing and drawing. Set in the same universe as Mike's Bowling with Corpses book. I'll be working on that stuff for as long as I can get away with it.
