Weekend Box Office Update

2013/05/12 19:03:35 +00:00 | Jonathan James

The Great Gatsby had a very solid opening, but it was no match for Iron Man 3 in its second weekend. Iron Man 3 added an impressive $72.4 million to its total over the weekend, and has earned $948.9 million worldwide since opening. The Great Gatsby opened with $51.1 million, which is a strong start, but we'll have to see how it performs over the next few weeks.

Aside from those two movies, there isn't much to be excited about. Taking third place was Pain & Gain with $5 million, and in a rare occurrence, tenth place only earned $802,000. We're keeping an eye on Evil Dead until it leaves theaters, and it added another $4 million to its total. Foreign ticket sales will have a factor on sequel chances and the movie currently sits at $76 million worldwide.

Next weekend should be interesting with the opening of Star Trek Into Darkness. There's been some back and forth on estimates regarding how big the movie will open, and with it opening wide on Thursday, we're interested to see how the weekend totals look compared to Iron Man 3. Here are your top ten results for this weekend:

1. Iron Man 3 - $72,472,000
2. The Great Gatsby - $51,115,000
3. Pain & Gain - $5,000,000

7. The Croods - $3,600,000
8. The Big Wedding - $2,500,000
