Weekend Box Office Update

Fast & Furious 6 ruled the weekend once again, adding another $34.5 million to its domestic total. To date, the movie has earned $480 million worldwide and it should continue to perform well over the coming weeks. Now You See Me surprised everyone by passing After Earth and taking second place with $28 million. The movie's production budget was around $75 million, so Lionsgate should be happy with the results.

M. Night Shyamalan can't seem to catch a break. Even Will Smith wasn't enough to get people into theater seats to see After Earth. What was produced as a major event movie only took third place with $27 million. The movie's budget was estimated at $130 million and you also have to factor major marketing costs for this film, so it will be difficult for this movie to get out of the red during its theatrical run.

Epic, Star Trek Into Darkness, Iron Man 3, and The Great Gatsby all had decent weekends, but nothing that really stands out. Next week sees the wide release of The Internship, while The Purge will see a somewhat smaller release on 2,400 screens. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Fast & Furious 6 - $34,538,000
2. Now You See Me - $28,050,000
3. After Earth - $27,000,000
4. Star Trek Into Darkness - $16,400,000
5. Epic - $16,400,000
6. The Hangover Part III $15,930,000
7. Iron Man 3 - $8,006,000
8. The Great Gatsby - $6,265,000
9. Mud - $1,226,000
10. The Croods - $615,000
