Weekend Box Office Update

It was another close race at the box office, but The Hobbit sequel managed to stay on top. After taking in $29.8 million this weekend, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is less than $10 million away from crossing the $200 million mark in the US. In second place was Frozen, which earned $28.8 million over the weekend and has made more than $248 million in the US.

Anchorman 2, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Saving Mr. Banks all did pretty well this weekend, especially considering their production budgets. A number of these films are likely to earn Academy Award nominations, so they should have a longer life at the box office. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty isn't necessarily a failure, but it wasn't able to compete with the other offerings this weekend. Still, it's wasn't as bad as 47 Ronin's performance. With a production budget of $200 million, 47 Ronin has only earned $20.5 million since opening earlier in the week and is unlikely to stay in the top ten next weekend.

Looking at next week, we get our first horror release in a while when Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones opens on Friday. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - $29,850,000
2. Frozen - $28,845,000
3. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - $20,150,000
4. American Hustle - $19,550,000
5. The Wolf of Wall Street - $18,510,000
6. Saving Mr. Banks - $14,021,000
7. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - $13,000,000
8. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - $10,200,000
9. 47 Ronin - $9,869,000
10. Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas - $7,400,000
