Weekend Box Office Update

2011/08/21 22:09:19 +00:00 | Jonathan James

The Help took the top spot at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $20.7 million and bringing its total to $71.8 million. Rise of the Planet of the Apes held onto the second spot, increasing its domestic total to $133 million.

This was a dissapointing weekend at the box office for new movies. Fright Night, Conan the Barbarian, and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World all performed below expectations. In the case of Fright Night and Conan, both were 3D R-rated films that had to compete with each other and Final Destination 5.

Next weekend's big horror release is Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. While there has been a lot of buzz for this film in the horror community, it may be difficult for it to compete in the sea of new movies and R-rated offerings. Here are this weekend's top 10 box office results:

1.  The Help - $20,479,000
2.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $16,300,000
3.  Spy Kids: All the Time in the World - $12,020,000
4.  Conan the Barbarian - $10,000,000
5.  The Smurfs - $8,000,000
6.  Fright Night - $7,900,000
7.  Final Destination 5 - $7,705,000
8.  30 Minutes or Less - $6,300,000
9.  One Day - $5,128,000
10. Crazy, Stupid, Love. - $4,950,000
