Weekend Box Office Update

2011/08/28 21:16:20 +00:00 | Jonathan James

The Help remained number 1 at the box office this weekend, earning $14.3 million. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark opened to $8.6 million, which isn't a great, but isn't unexpected either. Contributing factors to the low opening include the R-rating, Hurricane Irene slowing down east coast ticket sales, and the fact that Conan, Fight Night, Final Destination 5, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are splitting the genre audience.

Next week's horror openings are Apollo 18 and Shark Night 3D. Here are the top 10 box office estimates for this weekend:

1.  The Help - $14,333,000
2.  Colombiana - $10,300,000
3.  Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - $8,689,000
4.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $8,650,000
5.  Our Idiot Brother - $6,588,000
6.  Spy Kids: All the Time in the World - $5,727,000
7.  The Smurfs - $4,800,000
8.  Conan the Barbarian - $3,100,000
9.  Fright Night - $3,029,000
10. Crazy, Stupid, Love. - $2,905,000
