Weekend Box Office Update

We saw a couple of new movies enter the top ten, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fought them all off at the box office this weekend and held onto the top spot. The Ninja Turtles reboot earned $28.4 million in the US over the weekend and brought its domestic total to $117.6 million. As mentioned last weekend, a sequel has already been greenlit and will be released on June 3rd, 2016.

Guardians of the Galaxy also held onto second place for the second weekend in a row. To date, the movie has earned $222.2 million in the US and has earned $418.6 million worldwide. Guardians is on track to surpass the domestic total of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and may do the same globally as well. Marvel announced the sequel back at Comic-Con and it will be released on July 28th, 2017.

The next three spots all belong to new releases, which had varying degrees of success. Let's Be Cops placed third with $17.7 million, but has earned a total of $26.1 million since opening on Wednesday. With a production budget of only $17 million, Fox should be happy with the performance of this R-rated comedy. The Expendables 3 underperformed with $16.2 million and was the lowest opening weekend in the series. The poor performance will likely be blamed on multiple factors, including bad timing against popular movies that beat expectations, the movie being leaked online, and the change to a PG-13 rating. The Giver placed fifth with $12.7 million, but it carried a modest production budget and should make it out of the red by the time it reaches Blu-ray / DVD / VOD.

Next weekend sees the release of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, If I Stay, and When the Game Stands Tall. With all three movies having a smaller national release in under 3,000 screens, it's possible that Ninja Turtles and Guardians could hold onto the top two spots once again. Here's a look at this week's top ten:
