Weekend Box Office Update

2011/10/16 20:49:46 +00:00 | Jonathan James

Real Steel took the top spot once again this weekend, earning $16.3 million and bringing its domestic total to $51.7 million. The Thing (2011) earned a disappointing $8.7 million this weekend at the box office. This opening falls in line with recent opening weekends for genre remakes/reboots, including Fright Night ($7.7 million) and the Conan reboot ($10 million).

While unlikely, hopefully these weak openings will convince more studios to push for original material or at least put more effort into creating quality remakes. Next weekend should see the biggest horror opening of the year, with the release of Paranormal Activity 3. Here are the 10 ten box office results for this weekend:

1. Real Steel - $16,304,000
2. Footloose (2011) - $16,100,000
3. The Thing (2011) - $8,700,000
4. The Ides of March - $7,500,000
5. Dolphin Tale - $6,345,000
6. Moneyball - $5,500,000
7. 50/50 - $4,315,000
8. Courageous - $3,400,000
9. The Big Year - $3,325,000
10. The Lion King 3D - $2,708,000
