Weekend Box Office Update

2012/01/22 23:34:41 +00:00 | Jonathan James

Underworld Awakening had a strong opening with $25.4 million and took the top spot at the box office this weekend. This was the 2nd biggest opening for the Underworld franchise, behind 2006's $26.8 million opening for Underworld: Evolution. Should Underworld Awakening continue to perform well in the coming weeks, a sequel looks likely.

Red Tails and Haywire were also new releases this week and had decent openings. Contraband continues to do solid business and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is very close to crossing the $200 million domestic mark. Next week's openings include The Grey, Man on a Ledge, and One for the Money. Robin Hardy's The Wicker Tree will also receive a limited theatrical release. Here are the top 10 results from this weekend:

1. Underworld Awakening - $25,400,000
2. Red Tails - $19,100,000
3. Contraband - $12,200,000
4. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - $10,545,000
5. Haywire - $9,000,000
6. Beauty & the Beast 3D - $8,556,000
7. Joyful Noise - $6,075,000
8. Mission: Impossible 4 - Ghost Protocol - $5,540,000
9. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - $4,805,000
10. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - $3,750,000
