Weekend Box Office Update

Super Bowl weekend proved to be big for genre films, with both Chronicle and The Woman in Black earning over $20 million at the box office. Chronicle claims the top spot with $22 million, while The Woman in Black takes a close second with $21 million. Weekend box office results are always studio-projected estimates, so if there is a swap in the first and second spot, we'll post an update on Monday.

The Grey held onto third place, earning $9.5 million and bringing its total to $34.7 million. Underworld Awakening crossed the $50 million mark and is now at a total of $54.3 million. Underworld Awakening has passed the US theatrical lifetime gross for the original Underworld and Rise of the Lycans, and is likely to be the top grossing film in the franchise by the time it leaves theaters.

Next week sees the release of Safe House, The Vow, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D. Here are the top 10 box office results for this weekend:
