Weekend Box Office Update

2012/02/12 22:05:50 +00:00 | Jonathan James

The Vow seemingly came out of nowhere and grabbed the top spot, earning $41.7 million. It was the biggest opening for a Screen Gems film and will likely stay strong due to Valentine's Day next week. Denzel Washington's Safe House earned a solid $39.3 million and was a much needed win for Ryan Reynolds.

Chronicle and The Woman in Black had respectable showings for their second weekend. Underworld Awakening is less than $4 million shy of being the highest grossing film in the Underworld series, so we should see it cross that mark in the next week or two.

New releases for next weekend include Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Scret World of Arriety, and This Means War. Here are the top 10 results for this weekend:

1. The Vow - $41,700,000
2. Safe House - $39,300,000
3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $27,550,000
4. The Phantom Menace (3D) - $23,000,000
5. Chronicle - $12,300,000
6. The Woman in Black - $10,300,000
7. The Grey - $5,080,000
8. Big Miracle - $3,900,000
9. The Descendants - $3,500,000
10. Underworld Awakening - $2,500,000
