Weekend Box Office Update

The Lorax once again held onto the top spot and has earned $121.9 million since opening. John Carter received plenty of critical praise, but had been tracking poorly for a while now and was expected to perform below Disney's original expectations of it being a major event film. With an estimated production budget of $250 million, John Carter's opening at second place was disappointing, although expected.

Silent House was the new horror release this week and earned $7 million, which was respectable considering the low theater count and smaller marketing budget. There are no genre releases next weekend, with the only wide opening being 21 Jump Street. Here are the top 10 results for this weekend:

1. The Lorax - $39,100,000
2. John Carter - $30,603,000
3. Project X - $11,550,000
4. Silent House - $7,010,000
5. Act of Valor - $7,000,000
6. A Thousand Words - $6,350,000
7. Safe House - $5,000,000
8. The Vow - $4,000,000
9. This Means War - $3,750,000
10. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $3,685,000
