Weekend Box Office Update

2012/04/08 19:51:03 +00:00 | Jonathan James

As expected, American Reunion and Titanic (3D) were no match for The Hunger Games, which easily held onto the top spot for the third weekend in a row. The Hunger Games made $33.5 million this weekend and has earned a total of $302 million. American Reunion took second place with $21.5 million, but didn't come close to the opening weekends of American Pie, American Pie 2, and American Wedding

Wrath of the Titans was unable to catch on at the US box office and is no doubt a disappointment for the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. It wasn't able to match the opening weekend of Clash of the Titans, even in its second weekend. 21 Jump Street, on the other hand, continues to do solid business for Sony and has just crossed the $100 million mark.

Next weekend sees the release of The Three StoogesThe Cabin in the Woods, and Lockout. Based on early screening reactions, The Cabin in the Woods could easily be one of the top horror release of the year. It will be interesting to see how it does at the box office, especially when it has to fight off Lockout and The Hunger Games who have similar audiences. The Cabin in the Woods is one of those movies that could have a long life at the box office due to positive word of mouth and we're interested to follow its box office results from week to week. Here are the top 10 results for this weekend:

1. The Hunger Games - $33,500,000
2. American Reunion - $21,500,000
3. Titanic (3D) - $17,350,000

8. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - $975,000
