Weekend Box Office Update

2013/03/24 19:06:02 +00:00 | Jonathan James

After a slow month at the box office in February, things have really picked up this month. The Croods took first place with $44.7 million, but Olympus Has Fallen was the surprise of the weekend. The R-rated action movie movie opened on 3,000 screens and earned an impressive $30 million. While it was a large budget production for FilmDistrict, the movie only cost an estimated $70 million, so Olympus Has Fallen should have no problem making that back.

Admission was the other new release for the week and underperformed. While it had a smaller theater count, its per theater average was drastically lower than the other new releases. We don't have any major horror releases next weekend, but we will see the wide release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation on Thursday, followed by The Host and Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor on Friday. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. The Croods - $44,700,000
2. Olympus Has Fallen - $30,500,000
3. Oz The Great and Powerful - $22,031,000
4. The Call - $8,700,000
5. Admission - $6,446,000
6. Spring Breakers - $5,000,000
7. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone - $4,275,000
8. Jack the Giant Slayer - $2,965,000
9. Identity Thief - $2,500,000
10. Snitch - $1,930,000
