Weekend Box Office Update

Oblivion took first place at the box office with $38.1 million over the weekend, making this the biggest opening for Tom Cruise since Mission: Impossible III in 2006. Given the $120 million production budget, the movie's weekend take may not normally be considered a huge success, but it performed very well internationally, and the movie has already earned a total of $150.1 million worldwide.

In a distant, but still impressive, second place is 42, which took in $18 million in its second weekend and has earned a total of $54 million since opening. None of the other movies in the top ten were able to break the $10 million mark, but The Croods crossed the $150 million mark and Evil Dead is just a little bit shy of the $50 million mark. Evil Dead has been opening slowly internationally, but just opened in the UK this weekend, so we should have updated totals next week.

The Lords of Salem was the new horror release this weekend, but it's not on the top ten. That doesn't have to do with individual theater ticket sales as much as it has to do with overall theater count. Anchor Bay Films is known for their limited releases, and The Lords of Salem played on only 354 screens across the country, earning $622,000 over the weekend. Previously, Anchor Bay mentioned that they have plans to expand the movie into more theaters, so we'll keep Daily Dead readers posted.

The big releases for next week are Pain and Gain, and The Big Wedding. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Oblivion - $38,152,000
2. 42 - $18,025,000
3. The Croods - $9,500,000
4. Scary Movie 5 - $6,296,000
5. G.I. Joe: Retaliation - $5,775,000
6. The Place Beyond the Pines - $4,746,000
7. Olympus Has Fallen - $4,500,000
8. Evil Dead - $4,100,000
9. Jurassic Park 3D - $4,008,000
10. Oz The Great and Powerful - $3,048,000
