Weekend Box Office Update

2013/04/28 20:41:05 +00:00 | Jonathan James

It was a bit slow at the box office this weekend, but likely to be the last slow weekend for a while. Pain & Gain opened with an estimated $20 million and easily claimed the top spot. While not bad for the R-rated film, it's not likely to have a strong presence at the box office in the coming weeks. Oblivion took second place with $17.4 million. As mentioned last week, Oblivion isn't a massive hit in the US, but it's about to cross $200 million worldwide.

Aside from the two movies above and 42, everything else earned under $10 million and there's nothing too exciting to report on here. Evil Dead left the top ten, but did cross the $50 million mark in the US. It opened in the UK last weekend, so the movie now has a worldwide total of $65.1 million. It's unlikely to cross the $100 million mark any time soon, but this could be good enough to merit a sequel.

The Lords of Salem is still in theaters, but the theater count saw a decrease instead of the increase that was previously suggested by Anchor Bay. In 280 theaters, the movie earned $178,000  over the weekend and has made $1,033,000 since last week. Iron Man 3 is set to give the box office a much-needed boost next weekend. It's already breaking The Avengers' records overseas and could do the same in the US. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Pain & Gain - $20,000,000
2. Oblivion - $17,443,000
3. 42 - $10,725,000
4. The Big Wedding - $7,500,000
5. The Croods - $6,600,000
6. G.I. Joe: Retaliation - $3,620,000
7. Scary Movie 5 - $3,457,000
8. Olympus Has Fallen - $2,768,000
9. The Place Beyond the Pines - $2,699,000
10. Jurassic Park 3D - $2,310,000
