Details about the latest film in the Predator franchise are slowly coming to the surface. In a recent interview with Collider, co-writer/director Shane Black touched on the time period of the new film and how they may explore possibilities of paying tribute to the previous movies in the franchise, especially the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring original.

Speaking with Collider's Steve Weintraub at CinemaCon, Black mentioned that it looks like The Predator will be his next film and that he wants to channel the "fresh" thrills and immersive storytelling of 1987's Predator (in which he co-starred as the wisecracking Rick Hawkins):

"...it doesn’t have to be huge—but it just has to feel like a Predator movie you want to see in the summer and line up for it... Let’s get back to the excitement and innovation of that original movie where it felt fresh."

When asked about the timeline of The Predator, Black said that it will take place in modern times:

"This one will be set in present day."

Black also discussed the possibility of Schwarzenegger returning to the franchise and recognizing elements of not only the first film, but the sequels as well:

"I think it’s something we’re looking into, and as this thing evolves and takes on more of a shape, we’ll figure out how best to honor the tradition of what is really a remarkable first movie and even parts of the rest of them as well."

The Predator is slated for a March 2nd, 2018 release from 20th Century Fox. Plot details are unknown at this time, but the new film is expected to be more of a sequel than a reboot.

Black will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad—a film also written with Black).

Throughout his filmmaking career, Black has delivered when it comes to character development and engrossing action. His directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, cemented itself as a must-see cult film, and Iron Man 3 made a big splash in the box office. Black’s next movie, the 1970s-set The Nice Guys, hits theaters on May 20th. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more details on The Predator as they are revealed.
