After the blood-soaked wedding reception of [REC] 3: Genesis, the influential Spanish zombie franchise is going back to its roots in its fourth entry with familiar faces behind and in front of the camera. This time around the zombie virus breaks out on an isolated ship at sea, and a new batch of stills from the film feature up-close looks at the ravenous living dead as they hunt the vessel's crew.

"Several hours have passed since the terrible events that ravaged the old building in Barcelona. After the chaos of the first few moments, the army decided to intervene and an elite group of soldiers infiltrated the building in order to plant detonators and put an end to this nightmare once and for all. The mission is a success; quick and precise. Angela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman just hours before, manages to make it out alive. But what they don’t know is that she hasn’t made it out of the building alone; within her she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will have to stay in isolation for several days. A perfect location for the virus to be reborn in all its splendor. It will take on new and even more deadly forms, setting the scene for horrors we could only have imagined, before finally revealing its true nature. The apocalypse has just begun…"

Actress Manuela Velasco reprises her role as Angela Vidal from the first [REC]. The cast also includes Paco Manzanedo, Hector Colome, and Ismael Fritschi. Director Jaume Balagueró, who co-helmed the first two entries in the franchise with Paco Plaza, directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Manu Díez. Magnet Releasing will unleash [REC] 4: Apocalypse in theaters, on demand, and on iTunes on January 2nd, 2015.

As the trailer and images below indicate, a zombie infection on an isolated ship should make for some tight quarters carnage, but we will not see it via a handheld lens, as [REC] 4: Apocalypse does not feature the found footage filming style of its predecessors ([REC] 3: Genesis used a mix of traditional camerawork and found footage).
