Following the recent news that Russell Crowe is in early talks to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Mummy, Universal has now released the official synopsis for the Tom Cruise-starring film.

The synopsis for The Mummy confirms that Sofia Boutella plays the title character while also touching on the modern-day setting and key locations within the story. You can read the full synopsis below, courtesy of Collider:

"Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters."

Directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Doctor StrangePrometheus), and scheduled to hit theaters on June 9th, 2017, The Mummy is the first step in creating the new Universal Monsters universe, with filming currently underway on the movie.

Along with Cruise and Boutella, The Mummy stars Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Marwan Kenzari, and Courtney B. Vance. If a deal is solidified, Crowe could also appear in the film as the classic literary character with a deadly alter ego.

Other Universal Monster projects include The Invisible Man, which has Johnny Depp lined up for the starring role, and David Koepp (Jurassic ParkDark Angel) is writing a script for a new Bride of Frankenstein film. Universal has April 13th, 2018 and February 15th, 2019, reserved for Universal Monster movie debuts, and time will tell if Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will be pencilled in for a solo movie.
