The 2018 Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. While it was expected that Guillermo del Toro would be nominated for The Shape of Water, the movie leads with the most nominations this year and we were happy to see multiple nominations for Jordan Peele's Get Out.

The Shape of Water picked up 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Directing (Guillermo del Toro), Actress in a Leading Role (Sally Hawkins), Writing (Original Screenplay), Actor in a Supporting Role (Richard Jenkins), Actress in a Supporting Role (Octavia Spencer), Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Costume Design, Cinematography, and Production Design.

Meanwhile, Get Out was nominated for Best Picture, along with Directing (Jordan Peele), Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Kaluuya), and Original Screenplay. Other genre movies featured this year included The Last Jedi, Logan, and Blade Runner 2049.

As Daily Dead readers know, genre films are often under-represented at the Oscars, so it's very exciting to see these movies getting the kind of recognition they deserve. We wish the best of luck to Guillermo del Toro, Jordan Peele, and the other nominees. We'll find out who takes home awards on March 4th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the 2018 award ceremony, celebrating its 90th year. Here's the full list of nominations via NPR:
