If the film adaptation of World War Z is successful, don't be surprised if multiple sequels follow. According to a recent report, Paramount is interested in turning World War Z into a film franchise.

During a recent feature on Brad Pitt, The Los Angeles Times reported that "Forster and Paramount Pictures each view 'World War Z' as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of, say, Damon's Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC's 'The Walking Dead.' "

Whether or not sequel plans are based on material from the original Max Brooks novel is unknown at this point. Previously Marc Forster discussed changes to the story and why they were necessary: “The idea, obviously the book is not written as a narrative, you try to take things from the book, but at same time you’re changing certain things… I do feel we’re trying to keep it in the spirit of the book because it’s important. We are doing our own film, telling our own story because we had to… But trying to still include as much as we can from the book.”

World War Z is directed by Marc Forster and stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, and Matthew Fox. The movie is currently filming and is scheduled for release on December 21, 2012.

“The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen.”
