Guillermo Del Toro is officially directing Pacific Rim for Legendary Pictures. With shooting starting in September for a summer 2013 release, Pacific Rim is described as a film that is “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.”

Guillermo Del Toro had the following to say in an official press release:

"We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me."

He's a visionary director that needs to be making new films and it is a shame that he's been held up for the last couple years by all of these business-related items. After multiple false starts, I'm glad that he's officially starting Pacific Rim, although I'm disappointed we won't be seeing At the Mountains of Madness right now. Hopefully, with more hit releases, he'll be able to return to that and other films he is interested in directing.
