Blending sharp humour, cinematic storytelling, and striking Hollywood-grade makeup and special effects, the film delivers a bold genre experience that mixes laughs with unsettling horror.
Written and executive produced by award-winning playwright and screenwriter Eliza Power, the screenplay for A Hand to Hold won several international awards before being adapted for the screen. Power, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, has built an international reputation across theatre, film, and television, with work staged in cities including London, New York, Sydney, and Berlin.
Director Philip Clyde-Smith brings more than twenty years of experience directing commercials for global brands. Known for blending dark humour with emotionally grounded performances, his work often explores the point where the ordinary collides with the uncanny. With A Hand to Hold, he leans fully into genre filmmaking, combining dark comedy and body horror to explore the complicated dynamics of love, control, and letting go.
The film features an original score by Golden Globe nominated composer Brian Byrne, internationally recognised for his work on the Academy Award nominated film Albert Nobbs. A two time World Soundtrack Award winner and three time Irish Film and Television Award winner, Byrne has collaborated with artists including Barbra Streisand, Bono, Katy Perry, and Josh Groban, bringing a rich cinematic sound to the film.
Behind the camera, the production is led by veteran producer Greg Mills with Georgia Mills as line producer. Cinematography is by Deane Thrussell, with costume design by Alessandra Aschenbrenner, production design by Cheryl Tarbuck, and art direction by Louis Lasa-Tarbuck. The film’s striking practical effects are created by special effects and makeup designer Eve Pashley, whose prosthetic work gives the short a distinctly big-screen visual impact.
The film stars acclaimed stage and screen actress Frances Barber as Moira, whose extensive career includes the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and television hits including Doctor Who. She is joined by Murray McArthur, alongside a strong supporting cast including Frank Bourke (His Dark Materials), Lisa O'Connor (Call the Midwife), Shane Casey (The Young Offenders), and Katherine Moran (Slow Horses).
In a special appearance, British entertainment legend Jimmy Tarbuck takes on the role of a priest, marking his first ever appearance in the horror genre.
With its mix of sharp comedy, striking practical effects, and an accomplished cast and creative team, A Hand to Hold promises audiences a wickedly entertaining genre short that proves horror and humour can be a perfect match, and will now be showcased to international audiences at the Cleveland International Film Festival."
