Weekend Box Office Update

Horror continues to have a great run in the month of January. Following successful opening weekends for Texas Chainsaw 3D and Mama, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters claimed the top spot this weekend with $19 million.

Paramount was wise to move the film from its original early 2012 release date, because Jeremy Renner's popularity has increased since The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy. While the movie's opening wasn't as impressive as Mama last weekend, this is definitely a win for the R-rated movie.

Speaking of Mama, positive word of mouth and decent reviews gave this movie legs, and it took second place with $12.8 million. This is in stark contrast to Texas Chainsaw, which made most of its money in the first weekend and is now out of the top ten. Oscar contenders Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty continue to perform well and took the third and fourth place. In fifth and seventh place were new releases Parker and Movie 43, which didn't manage to find much of an audience this weekend.

It's looking like horror will continue to dominate the box office, as Warm Bodies opens on February 1st and only has to compete against Bullet to the Head, which has a smaller theater release count. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - $19,000,000
2. Mama - $12,860,000
3. Silver Linings Playbook - $10,000,000
4. Zero Dark Thirty - $9,800,000
5. Parker - $7,000,000
6. Django Unchained - $5,005,000
7. Movie 43 - $5,000,000
8. Gangster Squad - $4,200,000
9. Broken City - $4,000,000
10. Les Miserables - $3,912,000
