Weekend Box Office Update

Super 8 beat industry expectations this weekend, earning $37 million dollars. The J.J. Abrams-directed sci-fi had a reported budget of only $50 million, so Paramount is definitely going to consider this one a win.

X-Men: First Class took second place this weekend, earning $25 million and bringing its total to almost $99 million. First Class has not been a runaway success, but if Fox looked at this like Batman Begins, they went into this knowing that they'd probably take a hit on the first film.

The Hangover Part II crossed the $200 million mark this weekend and should continue to perform well for at least the next few weeks. The big movies opening next weekend are Green Lantern and Jim Carrey's Mr. Popper's Penguins. Here are the top ten box office earners for this weekend:

1    Super 8 - $37,000,000
2    X-Men: First Class - $25,000,000
3    The Hangover Part II - $18,500,000
4    Kung Fu Panda 2 - $16,635,000
5    Pirates of the Caribbean... - $10,846,000
6    Bridesmaids - $10,154,000
7    Judy Moody... - $6,267,000
8    Midnight in Paris - $6,146,000
9    Thor - $2,370,000
10   Fast Five - $1,714,000
