Not even the virtual reality pleasures of the OASIS could hold back the powerful silence of John Krasinski's A Quiet Place this weekend at the box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, raked in an estimated $50 million in its first weekend in US theaters, taking the top spot from Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, which finished in second place with a little over $25 million in its second weekend in cinemas. A Quiet Place was made with an estimated production budget of $17 million, so the $50 million opening weekend is a big win for Paramount Pictures and the horror genre.

How does A Quiet Place's opening weekend compare to other popular modern horror films? Box Office Mojo points out that Krasinski's new movie made more money than any of The Conjuring movies, Insidious films, and all but one (the third film in the series) of the Paranormal Activity entries on their respective opening weekends.

A Quiet Place also made some noise outside of the US with an additional estimated $21 million combined from countries such as the UK, Mexico, and Australia.

It's encouraging to see a horror movie make such a splash with both critics (read Heather Wixson's 4.5-star review here) and at the box office, especially this early in the year. We can't wait to see what Krasinski does next behind the camera, and we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more box office numbers come in. Did you see A Quiet Place in theaters this weekend? What did you think?
