Dark Horse Comics' Hellboy in Hell may have concluded its run, but there are still many adventures ahead for the beloved (and feared) demon. This week marks the release of Hellboy in Hell: The Death Card Volume 2, and in the future, readers will be treated to several epic comic book stories within Mike Mignola's immersive universe, including Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, a new graphic novel that is teased in our exclusive set of preview pages ahead of the story's release next year.

In addition to Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, 2017 will also see the release of The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed, a new comic book series featuring Hellboy and enigmatic aliens (that alone should have readers anxiously awaiting February's arrival).

To learn more about both of these projects, we have their official press releases with full details, below, as well as a teaser video for The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed. And be sure to also check out our exclusive preview pages from Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, courtesy of Dark Horse Comics.

Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea Press Release: "August 10, 2016) Next spring, Dark Horse Comics will publish an original graphic novel, HELLBOY: INTO THE SILENT SEA, co-written by legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, co-written and illustrated by Eisner Award winning artist Gary Gianni and colored by award winning colorist Dave Stewart. Following the events of the classic story “The Island”, Hellboy sets sail from the wreckage of a deserted island only to cross paths with a ghost ship. Taken captive by the phantom crew that plans to sell him to the circus, Hellboy is dragged along by a captain who will stop at nothing in pursuit of a powerful sea creature.

Gary Gianni has previously collaborated with iconic writers including George R. R. Martin, Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury and Michael Chabon and teamed up with Michael Kaluta to work on the classic pulp hero, The Shadow. Gianni is best known the creator of the Monstermen series which appeared as a back-up feature in HELLBOY. He also illustrated Prince Valiant, the syndicated newspaper comic strip, for 8 years. Gianni will illustrate HELLBOY: INTO THE SILENT SEA, with colors by Dave Stewart; Mignola will provide a cover, with colors by Stewart.

"I imagine if HELLBOY: INTO THE SILENT SEA were a movie, the Hollywood hyperbole would describe it as Hellboy's greatest adventure,” said Gary Gianni. “Yes... it's Hellboy as you've never seen him before, laughing , loving and battling his way across the stormy seas! You'll be thrilled as he faces cosmic forces terrorizing a haunted ship manned by a desperate crew! Be sure not to miss HELLBOY: INTO THE SILENT SEA, the biggest comic book event of the year!"

HELLBOY: INTO THE SILENT SEA is the third Hellboy original graphic novel, following the classics, HELLBOY: HOUSE OF THE LIVING DEAD by Mignola, Richard Corben and Stewart (2011) and HELLBOY: THE MIDNIGHT CIRCUS by Mignola, Duncan Fegredo and Stewart."

The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed Press Release: "October 18, 2016) In 2017, one of the strangest and most unexpected mysteries of the Hellboy world will be revealed in an all new comic book series from Dark Horse Comics.

In THE VISITOR: HOW AND WHY HE STAYED, legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, iZombie co-creator Chris Roberson and Jack Staff creator Paul Grist will spotlight mysterious aliens and probe into a pivotal moment in Hellboy’s past for a surprising tale that harkens back to the character's first ever appearance. This 5 issue comic book series will be teased in a story in the forthcoming HELLBOY: WINTER SPECIAL 2017 on January 25th, before the first issue of THE VISITOR: HOW AND WHY HE STAYED debuts on February 22, 2017

"In Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, readers were given a brief glimpse of a crew of strange looking aliens monitoring the supernatural doings on Earth from way out in space. We later learned that one of those aliens had been sent to Earth to kill him in 1944, but chose to spare him at the last moment,” said Chris Roberson. “In THE VISITOR, we explore who those aliens are, why that assassin was sent to kill Hellboy, and just what he was doing in all of the years in between."

Joining co-writers Mignola and Roberson, and colorist Bill Crabtree, is cartoonist Paul Grist who will be making his Mignolaverse debut.

“I remember when I first read Hellboy: The Conqueror Worm,” said Grist. “Halfway through Mike Mignola throws in this character who has been tracking Hellboy ever since he arrived on Earth, who then promptly dies and is dismissed by Hellboy in a single sentence. And I thought NO! You can't do that! There has to be more to this guy’s life than that! And it turns out there was. And I'd like to thank Mike for asking me to help tell that story now.”

“THE VISITOR is the story of a stranger in a strange land,” Roberson added. “Stranded on Earth for more than half a century, an alien assassin observes humanity’s capacity both for compassion and for destruction. We see history unfold through his eyes, just as the experience of living among humans changes who he is.”

Dark Horse Comics will publish the first issue of THE VISITOR: HOW AND WHY HE STAYED, the most mysterious Hellboy spinoff yet, on February 22, 2017."
