H.P. Lovecraft's short story “Herbert West—Reanimator” was the basis for Stuart Gordon's cult classic 1985 horror comedy, and now the piece has inspired a new brew from Narragansett Beer: the Reanimator Helles Lager.

Available in 16-ounce tallboys throughout the East Coast, Reanimator Helles Lager is the third entry in Narragansett's Lovecraft beer series, following in the frightful footsteps of Innsmouth Olde Ale and Lovecraft Honey Ale. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for details on Narragansett's upcoming fourth Lovecraft-themed beer.

Press Release: PROVIDENCE, R.I.; October 5, 2015 – Narragansett Beer today announces the release of Reanimator Helles Lager as the third installment in its Lovecraft Series of beers celebrating the works of famed horror author and Providence native, H.P. Lovecraft. The new brew inspired by Lovecraft’s classic tale, “Herbert West—Reanimator” brings life back to Narragansett’s previously retired Bock beer, a play on Dr. Herbert West’s obsession with resurrecting the dead.

Reanimator Helles Lager is made with an invigorating blend of pale & pilsner malts and brewed with Northern Brewers Hops. This recipe, which once served as the base for Narragansett’s Bock, is then dry-hopped with Czech Saaz, Hallertau & Citra hops to give this smooth, malty traditional Bavarian offering a sophisticated spicy twist and a pleasing floral hop aroma.

“Lovecraft’s ‘Herbert West—Reanimator’ is one of my all-time favorite Lovecraft stories,” said Mark Hellendrung, President of Narragansett Beer.  “It has everything from a mad scientist, to the undead, to experiments gone wrong. It’s a classic story that has paved the way for so many others. In the story, Dr. West and his accomplice experiment with human reanimation by injecting corpses with a serum meant to bring the dead back to life. This inspired us to reanimate one of my personal favorites, our beloved Bock. In our case, dry-hopping Czech Saaz will serve as the ‘serum’ used to ‘revive’ the beer – but to a slightly different state – just like Dr. West’s subjects.”

Brewed under the supervision of Sean Larkin, Head Brewmaster for Narragansett and owner of Revival Brewing, Narragansett’s Reanimator Helles Lager is 6.5% percent Alcohol By Volume and 35 IBUs (International Bitterness Units), and is priced between $11.99 - $12.49 SRP per six pack of 16-ounce tallboys. The Reaminator Helles Lager can features a vibrant illustration by Cranston, R.I. resident Aaron Bosworth that depicts the boxer from Lovecraft’s story coming back from the dead with a vial of Dr. West’s notorious serum.

Following in the footsteps of earlier Lovecraft Series releases Lovecraft Honey Ale and the Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal-winning Innsmouth Olde Ale, the Reanimator Helles Lager will be distributed throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Florida. While the beer is rolling out now, the exact timing and availability of Reanimator Helles Lager will vary per market.

ABOUT H.P. LOVECRAFT:

H.P. Lovecraft was born in Providence, RI in 1890, the same year Narragansett Beer was founded just down the road. Though he toiled mostly in obscurity in small-press magazines during his life, today he is universally acclaimed as the “Father of Modern Horror.” Artists from Stephen King, to Neil Gaiman, Matallica, and Guillermo del Toro cite him as a direct influence. The Narragansett Lovecraft Series of collaborations follows the spirit of his “Cthulhu Mythos,” which invited fellow authors to write in the same shared universe of ideas.
