There were a lot of disappointed horror fans this week when it was announced that Guillermo Del Toro's planned adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness was dead at Universal. However, there is still hope out there that this film will be made at some point in time.

While Pacific Rim will definitely be Del Toro's next film, he recently gave an interview where he discussed the possibility of being able to take the project to another studio. There is interest from other studios, but unfortunately it is a lengthy process to release it from the hands of Universal:

"That is not a quick process. We would have needed first to get the formal terms of turnaround from Universal before we could formally get an answer from another studio. We were gauging interest and there was interest, very serious interest, but nothing that could happen before Universal names the terms in which they would allow us to try and set it up somewhere else. That is my hope right now that they just allow us to seek a home for this. It will remain a timely premise for years to come, so I don’t have to do it next month. I know it’s not an easy proposition. It is, if you have faith. I think a studio needs to fully believe in that."

I heard from a number of readers who were looking for some kind of follow up to the earlier news updates, so there you have it. I don't expect we'll be hearing about this project for quite some time, but at least it is still a possibility down the line. If you'd like to know more about the business behind the film's cancellation at Universal and Tom Cruise's involvement, you can check out the interview at the source link below.
