Ahead of the release of The Little Stranger in theaters this Friday, one of the film's stars, Domhnall Gleeson, reads from the novel by the same name, and we have the clip to share with our readers at the top of today's Horror Highlights. Also: VOD and DVD release details for Apocalypse Rising and news on the first book in Chris Whitworth's new children's horror novel series, Frightmares.

Domhnall Gleeson Reads from The Little Stranger: "THE LITTLE STRANGER tells the story of Dr. Faraday, the son of a housemaid, who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants - mother, son, and daughter - are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely, and how disturbingly, the family’s story is about to become entwined with his own.

Release Details for the First Book in Chris Whitworth's New Series Frightmares: Press Release: "New horror book series for kids, Frightmares, is set to be released this Halloween!

Michigan based author, Chris Whitworth, is writing the kids horror book series based on his own love of popular kids horror book titles from the 1990s and he is self-publishing the series through his own publishing company, Kraken Tales Press.

“The reason that I am self-publishing the books myself is this… my first novel was printed in 2009 and to this date, it has not sold enough copies to generate any kind of royalties here in the US. I had published four books through this one “publisher” and the book has sold like crazy across Europe and Asia, one’s even a textbook in Japan, funny enough. But, I don’t see a penny of those sales. My contract was for America only and that’s how the company is reaping the profits.”

Without naming any books or authors specifically, the 33-year-old author says that anyone who reads the Frightmares series, will recognize some similarities to a few popular series, but he does state the Frightmares is its own monster.

“Unlike most kids growing up in the 90s, I wasn’t into sports like basketball, which was huge because of Michael Jordan, Shaq, and guys like that. I played video games, collected superhero trading cards and read kids horror books. I couldn’t get enough of them. I had a favorite series, which, I’m pretty sure I can’t mention right now, but when a new one was a month from release, I’d track another series down just to keep me happy! I think my parents were happy that I was reading instead of wandering around the small town which I still live in and getting into trouble.”

The first book in the series, Pumpkin Patch Panic, will be available in time for Halloween 2018. The second book, Camp Vamp, will be out later in 2018 or early 2019. A total of 65 books have been planned out with no end in sight. The cover art for the book series is also done by a Michigan based artist, Laura Ellsworth.

“I had put up an ad on Craigslist back before they started charging you and I said that I was looking for a kids horror book artist. I talked with a few great artists who wanted $200 an hour, and I was looking for someone to do it for a flat rate. I met a few really awful artists who thought they were Da Vinci. Then, Laura emailed me and she was able to lock in the exact look I was going for!”

For more information, including how to get a copy of the first book, you can LIKE the official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/frightmaresbookseries/. More merchandise will be available with the book series and a 2019 book tour is in the works as well."

About the Author - Tamika Jones

Tamika hails from North Beach, Maryland, a tiny town inches from the Chesapeake Bay.She knew she wanted to be an actor after reciting a soliloquy by Sojourner Truth in front of her entire fifth grade class. Since then, she's appeared in over 20 film and television projects. In addition to acting, Tamika is the Indie Spotlight manager for Daily Dead, where she brings readers news on independent horror projects every weekend.

The first horror film Tamika watched was Child's Play. Being eight years old at the time, she remembers being so scared when Chucky came to life that she projectile vomited. It's tough for her to choose only one movie as her favorite horror film, so she picked two: Nosferatu and The Stepford Wives (1975).
