About Man of Action Entertainment/Joe Kelly

Man of Action Entertainment, the bi-coastal creative studio started in 2000, created the megahit Ben 10 and Generator Rex for Cartoon Network. Man of Action, a writers collective, are the creator/writer/ producers for a new Mega Man animated series for Dentsu and Capcom and they are also returning to their original creation as Executive Producers of a new Ben 10 series for Cartoon Network. Man of Action served as co-executive producer/writers for Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man and executive producer/writers for Marvel's Avengers Assemble on Disney XD. Man of Action Entertainment consists of creators Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle. Disney/Marvel's Academy Award®-winning feature Big Hero 6 utilized the characters and team created by Man of Action as credited in the main titles. The film marked the first time Disney turned Marvel comic book characters into an animated film and is also the first film based on a comic book I.P. to win an Academy Award®.

The quartet collectively worked on the largest franchise characters in comics from Superman to X-Men before refocusing on creating their own original worlds/characters for their original comic books and graphic novels published through their Man of Action imprint at Image Comics. In comics, Kelly's Eisner-nominated I Kill Giants (illustrated by Ken Niimura) received numerous awards and accolades domestically and internationally including the "International Manga Award" in 2012 and was named the one of the "Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens" by the Young Adult Library Services Association upon its release. Now I Kill Giants is in post-production as a feature film with a script by Kelly and produced by Kelly, Man of Action Entertainment, Chris Columbus' 1492 Pictures, XYZ Films and UMedia. Kelly's legendary Superman story, Action Comics #775: "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" was turned into a hit DC Universe 2012 animated film, Superman vs. The Elite, scripted by Kelly. He's long been credited with revising and revitalizing Deadpool and his creative thumbprint informed the characters, villains and origin story featured in the mega-hit film franchise.

Kelly's  recent comic book projects  include the dark irreverent comedy, Bad DogFour Eyes, the genre-splicing revenge tale about dragon-fighting in depression-era Manhattan, and BANG!TANGO, a crime noir thriller that is violent, sexy, and perverse — while simultaneously an examination of violence, sex, and perversion. Kelly also launched the New York Times Bestseller Spider-Man/Deadpool for Marvel. Next up: His new MOA/Image series, Kid Savage and his Kickstarter-funded short film, Poughkeepsie, debuts soon.

Q&A with The Shadow Effect Co-Director Obin Olson: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Obin. What attracted you to the story for The Shadow Effect (written by Evan and Chad Law) and made you want to bring it to life on screen?

Obin Olson: I think The Shadow Effect drew us to the sci-fi nature and the fact that the entire film creates this matrix-like effect with the question of what is real and what is not. The characters also seemed very honest and that is always something we look for.

What was the shooting schedule like for The Shadow Effect?

Obin Olson: The shooting schedule was tight. We knew we wanted to make a good movie and we opted for more crew and less time, something in hindsight that maybe would have been better if we approached it from the opposite direction, but nevertheless we got it in the can, and that at the end of the day is what matters most. You need it all in the can in order to make a movie in the edit. We always get that part done.

Do you have any favorite action/assassin movies that influenced or inspired you while making The Shadow Effect?

Obin Olson: I love The Matrix, I love movies by Luc Besson—Leon: The Professional, Lucy—I also love good thrillers like The Fugitive, the types of films that just grab you and don’t let go because the storyline is so compelling. Its super hard to find HONEST scripts that also grab you.

When you look back at your time on set, is there a particularly funny or memorable moment that stands out?

Obin Olson: I liked the moment we rolled the old trucks down the hill and had eight cameras filming it: helicopter cams, cellphones, production cameras, etc. Of course, working with Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Michel Biehn was awesome, but my favorite scenes are always when Amariah and I can go out and shoot some sweet action scenes alone with one actor and a camera. When it's natural and you're in the element and don’t have any of the caravan, it's always the most fun and freedom of creating.

What was the most challenging or rewarding scene to shoot?

Obin Olson: I really like the nature stuff with Cam [Gigandet] in the woods, something about pure nature shooting is very world creating and unique. The opening scene was also a lot of fun, as it was our first time shooting 100% from storyboards and seeing that “come to life” from a rough drawing to a scene that clicks together is just awesome.

What was it like working with the great Michael Biehn on this film?

Obin Olson: Amazing—best guy ever, low-key, wants to be there helping make it great—really awesome.

Is this a world you would consider returning to in a potential sequel?

Obin Olson: Sure, if the audience likes it, we can come back. But it would have to be in a way that is easy and has a lot of creative freedom.

With The Shadow Effect coming out on May 2nd, what projects do you have on deck that you can tease, and where can our readers find you online?

Obin Olson: We can be found on Facebook with our names and our website is olsonpictures.com. We have a cool, very indy-feeling thriller Body of Sin that is in post right now. It’s a female suspense film that I think is very sexy. We kind of just took off and said screw Hollywood, let’s make OUR film OUR way. I am very happy I did that and really like the movie. I think the female audience will love it. Who knows, maybe it will be a TV series. It has a great storyline that would lend to that. We will see...
