Ryan Murphy looks to be outdoing himself with the cast of American Horror Story Season 3. It has just been announced that Kathy Bates is the latest addition and we have details on the character she'll be playing. According to TVLine, Kathy Bates will play the best friend of Jessica Lange's character, and turns into her enemy. Although not confirmed, it sounds like she'll play a significant role and could be around for the bulk of the season.

It was previously revealed that Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe and Evan Peters will all be returning for the third season in new roles. The cast is still coming together, so we’re definitely expecting a few more of the past actors to make an appearance, along with some new faces.

Based on past conversations with Ryan Murphy, we know that the new season will be focused on a modern day story, but will include different time periods and different cities. It has been rumored that Season 3's theme could be witches, but that has not been confirmed at this time.

There will be plenty of details revealed over the coming months, but here’s what Murphy recently had to say about the direction the new season will be taking:

“I mean, I don’t think anything could ever be as dark as the mental health care system in our country. I sorta feel like for the third version I want to do something that’s a little bit more “evil glamour.” Just something that’s a little bit more…one of the things that I missed this season was I really loved having that Romeo & Juliet youth story with Violet and Tate. I want something like that again and we’re doing something like that in the third season. And we’re contemplating shooting the show in a different place. We’re contemplating shooting it in a place in the country where true horror has been. We’ve got lots of delicious plans.”

The third season of American Horror Story is expected to premiere later this year, and an October premiere with 13 episodes planned seems likely. For more details, visit our earlier coverage at:
