Locke & Key is a comic book series from Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez that has been very close to seeing the light of day as a movie and TV series in the past. While other efforts failed, Universal sees potential and has optioned the series with plans to develop a Lock & Key movie.

For those not familiar with the comic book series, it started in 2008 and follows Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke, who relocate with their mother to the family estate of Keyhouse after the murder of their father:

"Acclaimed suspense novelist and New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box) creates an all-new story of dark fantasy and wonder: Locke & Key. Written by Hill and featuring astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all..."

It's too early for news on the cast or director, but THR reports that Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Bobby Cohen and Ted Adams will be producing the project. Previously, a TV pilot was filmed for a potential Locke & Key series, but Fox passed on it.
