Last October, fans of MTV's Scream series were given an early Halloween treat when the network announced that the show had been renewed for a third, albeit shortened, season, and now it's being reported that the series could reboot with a new plot and new characters.

Deadline reports that MTV and Dimension TV are considering focusing on a different story in Scream Season 3 after following high schooler Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) and her Lakewood friends as they tried to survive a masked killer in the first two seasons (and a Halloween special).

No official confirmation has been made for these plans, so it's uncertain if a rebooted story will actually be featured in season 3, but Deadline reports that the cast is being allowed to take on other acting roles, with Fitzgerald recently coming on board Fox's Behind Enemy Lines pilot episode.

Additionally, a showrunner still has not been introduced for season 3. Michael Gans and Richard Register served as showrunners in season 2 following the departure of Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia, but with Gans and Register no longer leading the charge, their replacement(s) have yet to be named.

The fact that season 3 is slated to only consist of six episodes (down from the 12 installments of the second season, not including the two-part Halloween special) made it seem as though the network was going to give the series a chance to wrap up the Lakewood storyline and perhaps look ahead at starting a new story in a potential season 4, but if that direction isn't taken, it will be interesting to see if the episode order would be extended.

We'll be sure to keep you updated as more information is revealed and confirmed. In the meantime, what would you like to see in season 3? Do you want more of Emma and her friends, or would you like a clean, killer slate?
