We have bad news for horror fans hoping the next version of The Mummy would venture more into horror territory. While Len Wiseman (UnderworldTotal Recall) was originally set to direct the next reboot of The Mummy franchise, he left due to scheduling conflicts and Mama director Andy Muschietti boarded the project.

This time creative differences are to be blamed for Andy Muschetti leaving, with The Wrap reporting that he "wanted to deliver a darker take rather than the four-quadrant, more family-friendly action-adventure blockbuster that Universal now has in mind."

The Mummy was scheduled for release on April 22nd, 2016 and there is no word on if that date has been pushed back or who Universal is looking to replace Muschetti. Others still involved on the project include producers Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and Sean Daniel, and it's likely they'll continue to move forward with the screenplay from Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).
