While many felt that The Purge had a stronger concept than execution, it was a huge success at the box office. With a production budget of $3 million, the movie earned $89 million worldwide at the box office. Sequel plans began even before The Purge opened in theaters and we now know when it will be released.

The Purge 2 will be released by Universal on June 20th, 2014. James Monaco wrote, produced, and directed the first movie and will return for the sequel. There are no details on the direction this story will take, but we'll let readers know as soon as more information becomes available. Other movies set to open on June 20th include Jersey Boys and Think Like a Man Too.

For those that missed the first movie, here's the synopsis: "One night a year, all crime is legal and no one is safe in The Purge, a thought-provoking thriller from director and writer James DeMonaco (Assault on Precinct 13, The Negotiator) and producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister). In a future America, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period, The Purge, in which any and all criminal activity, including murder, is legal. On this night, one family is tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home."
