We spoke to co-director Eric Troop for the following interview.
Do you remember where and when you were when you first came up with the idea for the project?
Jim and I started working on this in 2012. I had just got out of a long-term, horrific relationship with an actress. I asked Jim if he wanted to make a film with me. We sat down and came up with this idea.
How did you pitch the project to your investors and cast?
After writing the script, Jim and I teamed up with some producers who tried to get investors. It was a crazy ride that is worthy of its own film. That one is a comedy for sure. We will call it, “FULL OF SHIT”. In the end, we wound up producing this ourselves, finding our own investors, and casting it mostly on our own as well. We created a teaser with the help of our friend Jijo Reed, and that helped us a lot to get people excited. We shot a few scenes and edited about 2 minutes worth.
Speaking of, was there anyone in the cast you, yourself, pushed for? For instance, whose idea was it to get Eric Roberts?
I really loved Daniel as Alan. We found a guy named “Scott Leet” from Freeway Killer who was a strong contender, but Daniel was right.
A producer friend of Jim's suggested Eric, and someone else did as well. Jim and I wrote him in and sent Eric the script. He loved it.
What did you learn from working with Roberts?
Eric is amazing, and a big personality. We started the first day of shooting with his scenes. I wish we had shot them later. It would have been nice to warm up. I learned that a crew is like a band. You need to be in a good mood or warm up to play well. After a few shaky moments of ego around some lines we wrote, we all warmed up and had a great time.
Is it harder or easier to co-direct with someone? Any bickering?
Jim and I have worked together since we were in high school and still play in a Punk Rock band called “Killroy” that we started together. If we bicker it's never deep. Neither of us takes it too personally. We both have our own voice, but they work well together.
And finally, the big question –what are they using for fake blood these days?
We don't use fake blood."
