Pacific Rim 2 is officially moving forward, but fans may be surprised to hear that Guillermo del Toro isn't returning to direct. Instead, it has been announced by Legendary Pictures (via THR) that Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus / Daredevil) will be making his directorial debut on the sequel.

This initial announcement was light on details, but we do know that Guillermo del Toro will be producing the film, along with Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, and Mary Parent, along with Jillian Share as an executive producer. There's also no word on a release date at this time, but Universal Pictures will distribute Pacific Rim 2 and it's planned as a 3D release.

While there will be some concern over del Toro not directing, he's already been very involved in the creative process with the Pacific Rim 2 script written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), and I'd be surprised if he isn't providing feedback to Steven S. DeKnight every step of the way. What do you think? Excited to see Pacific Rim 2 moving forward?
