Rio 2 had a strong showing this weekend, but it wasn't enough to dethrone the Captain America sequel from the top spot. Captain America: The Winter Solider earned an estimated $41.3 million in the US this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $159 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned $476 million.
Rio 2 placed second with $39 million, which puts it around $200,000 shy of Rio's opening weekend back in 2011. Oculus is the first wide theatrical horror release in a couple of months and it earned a respectable $12 million on 2,648 screens. With a budget of only $5 million and this being a Blumhouse production, a sequel moving forward could be likely if it can perform well over the next couple of weeks.
Everything else on the top ten earned under $10 million, including Draft Day, which placed fourth and was one of the new releases this weekend. Next week sees the release of Bears, A Haunted House 2, Heaven Is For Real, and Transcendence. Here's a look at this week's top ten:
