Weekend Box Office Update

2012/01/29 23:06:10 +00:00 | Jonathan James

New releases Man on a Ledge and One For the Money were no match for Liam Neeson in The Grey, which easily took the top spot this weekend. In a distant second place was last week's winner, Underworld Awakening, which has earned a total of $45 million since opening. January is usually a slow month, but it hasn't been the case this year with multiple strong genre openings.

Next week sees the release of 3 new genre films. The Woman in Black and Chronicle will have a wide release, while Ti West's The Innkeepers will start its limited theatrical run. Here are the top 10 box office results for this weekend:

1. The Grey - $20,000,000
2. Underworld Awakening - $12,500,000
3. One For the Money - $11,750,000
4. Red Tails - $10,400,000
5. Man on a Ledge - $8,300,000
6. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - $7,145,000

8. Contraband - $6,500,000
9. Beauty & the Beast 3D - $5,345,000
