Weekend Box Office Update

Battleship was tracking soft, but we don't think anyone was expecting it to open lower than John Carter. With a production budget of over $200 million (not including marketing), Battleship earned $25.3 million and took second place. Easily winning the weekend for a third time in a row was The Avengers, which earned $55 million and brought its domestic total to $457 million.

New releases The Dictator and What to Expect When You're Expecting both had soft openings and are unlikely to fare well in the following weeks. Dark Shadows placed fourth with $12 million and has earned a total of $50.9 million domestically. Even counting international ticket sales, Dark Shadows' performance is a disappointment, considering the  $150 million spent to produce the movie and the people involved.

The Avengers beating Battleship wasn't really a surprise, but next weekend may see a new movie taking the top spot when Men in Black 3 is released. Horror fans also have the release of Chernobyl Diaries to look forward to. Here are the top 10 box office results for this weekend:

1. The Avengers - $55,057,000
